Why Termsmith exists and what it is. Legal documents designed by a practising solicitor. Governed by English law.
Termsmith is an AI-powered service that generates UK legal documents tailored to your answers. Choose a document type, work through a short questionnaire about your business, and receive a Word document that reflects current English and Welsh law — typically in under two minutes. Every document is designed by a practising English solicitor, built on solicitor-authored question logic and clause structures, and generated by Anthropic’s Claude model under controlled prompts.
Termsmith is built and operated by an English qualified solicitor with many years’ experience in commercial law. The solicitor designs every document type’s question flow and clause structure; the AI handles variable-filling and language generation within those guardrails. The solicitor acts in a software-design capacity, not in a regulated legal services capacity — using Termsmith does not create a solicitor-client relationship, and the documents are AI-generated drafts, not the work product of a solicitor engaged to advise on your circumstances.
Termsmith is software, not a law firm. Generating draft legal documents is not a reserved legal activity under section 12 of the Legal Services Act 2007 — so it can be offered to UK businesses without SRA regulation, and is. Termsmith works well for straightforward commercial documents where the substance is known and the value of bespoke advice is limited. For complex, high-value or unusual matters, a solicitor’s advice on your specific situation is the right route — and a Termsmith document is a sensible drafting starting point that an adviser can refine.
