Hiring your first freelancer in the UK: the four clauses we believe actually matter

IR35, IP ownership, payment, kill fee. The four clauses that change with the situation in front of you. The rest is well-trodden territory — Termsmith…

When you hire your first freelancer in the UK, the contract you sign will have fifteen or twenty clauses. Most of them are standard. Governing law, notices, dispute resolution, the entire agreement clause, force majeure, no waiver — they appear in every well-drafted commercial contract because the legal system rewards them being there and punishes their absence. They don't change with the engagement. They just need to be present and properly drafted.
