A Zero-Hours Contract is an employment or worker contract under which the employer is not obliged to provide a minimum number of hours of work, and the worker is typically not obliged to accept any work offered. From October 2026, the Employment Rights Act 2025 introduces statutory guaranteed-hours rights for low-hours workers.
When a business has fluctuating staffing needs and wants the flexibility to offer work without committing to a minimum schedule. Common in hospitality, retail, healthcare, security and care sectors. From October 2026, employers will need to offer a guaranteed-hours contract to workers who have worked regular hours over a 12-week reference period.
